New Yard Restaurant, Lizard

We visited the New Yard Restaurant, Trelowarren for the first time for my partner's birthday. From point of booking to walking out of the door after our meal we received extremely friendly and helpful service in pleasant and comfortable surroundings. The food was beautifully presented and cooked to perfection and the birthday cake I had requested for my partner's birthday was superb. The timing of the service was perfect - we had just the right amount of time to savour and digest our beautiful meals without feeling rushed or kept waiting. We will definitely return, in fact we booked for Sunday lunch before we left!! Thank you Olly, Kirsty and the team.

Catch this pub on a sunny evening and you couldn't find a better spot in the county. It's peaceful, friendly and welcoming, with a real local feel. The food was of a high standard for pub grub - the fish and chips were delicious. This gem of a pub was as nice inside as it was out.

Really nice, peaceful location with a decent view of the sea from the tables outside. Typical pub-food really excellent and extremely friendly and accommodating staff. Thoroughly recommend, but do get there early as it seems, justifiably, very popular and, therefore, very busy.

We also visited on Tuesday April 5th when the staff had a coach party to cope with as well as everyone else in the pub. Excellent service. Excellent food. It will be top of our list next time we're on the Lizard. We both had scallops, perfectly cooked. Excellent flavour to dressings as well. Dessert to die for. Shame I had to share it!

We visited the Halzephron Inn last Tuesday lunchtime. The staff were coping with a coach load of visitors all having lunch and were doing so admirably. They were still very polite and efficient despite having to go back and forwards to the galley. We all enjoyed our lunches but mine was the best seafood chowder I have ever had. It was full of fish and crab claws just the way it should be. Thank you for a memorable lunch and we shall definitely be back.

South Cafe, Helston
Review by Maggie Ledra on 16 August 2010

South Cafe looks inviting from the outside, but so often restaurants are all style over substance. Not South Cafe, it is everything you would want from the moment you arrive to a friendly welcome and you enter the beautifully decorated restaurant. It's a lovely place to spend an evening, or a lunchtime.

We loved the menu which was a good choice of fish and seafood, and a very enticing ribeye steak and something I had never heard of called onglet. For starters we mostly chose the sardines based on what someone on another table was eating. When they arrived we were all wowed with the flavour and the generous helping. If we'd eaten nothing else we'd have been delighted to have something so well cooked and fresh and totally delicious. For my main course I chose the bouillabaisse, and my husband had lemon sole in a buttery sauce. Our friends had the steak and the seabass. Everything was perfectly cooked and beautifully presented, but best of all it tasted amazing. My bouillabaisse came with samphire which was delicious and nutty (the first time I've ever had it properly cooked in a restaurant), there was monkfish, seabass and mackerel as well as big prawns and juicy mussels. The sauce was delicious, and if that wasn't enough, it came with garlic bread and aioli. Everyone's meal was delicious and there was much "mmmmmming" going on throughout.

The desserts were also delicious and very generous. We ordered one of each and tasted everyone's when they arrived. Creme brulee, sticky toffee pudding, chocolate tart, everything perfectly cooked. The whole meal was so good we decided to go back two days later for our last evening in Cornwall.

With sardines on our minds we looked at the menu and saw it had changed and was based on the fish the chef had bought that day. I had the prawns as a starter and they came, 6 big prawns in shells with a delicious dressing. My husband had the mussels which tasted equally sumptuous. The whole meal was fantastic, oh, and I decided to have the onglet to see what it was. It was, not baby eel as I suspected it might be, but a cut of beef which is noted for its flavour rather than its tenderness. It came medium rare, but was cooked on a hot griddle and came with a delicious flavour, and was very tender alongwith beautifully cooked vegetables. Everyone was eyeing it up and hoping for a taste, not that their main courses wern't equally delicious.

If you venture into the Helston peninsula and drive to Manaccan, you must try out the South Cafe. You won't be disappointed. It is simply the best restaurant we've been to in Cornwall, and at prices that make Rick Stein's look just silly.

Imagine your best ever restaurant, your best ever food and your ideal price and hospitality and you've got it at South Cafe.

I didn't mention the winelist, but that delivers too. Highly recommended.

My family and I have eaten here several times recently - we had a lovely Sunday lunch, really enjoyed the curries at the Spice Night and just this weekend, had fantastic food from their evening menu too. The atmosphere is lovely, the owners and chefs (same people!) are really welcoming and the home-cooked, mainly organic cooking is delicious, inventive and really great value. Highly recommend you seek this place out, even if you have to travel a way to get there!

It’s not surprising that Fiona Were is described as one of the top ten female chefs in the UK - her dinner menu at Housel Bay Hotel on the Lizard is something really special...

Sesame tempura squid and Falmouth Bay scallops with crispy seaweed - slow roast shoulder of lamb with oven dried ripe tomatoes, puy lentils and salsa verde - lemon possett with honey baked nectarines and shortbread...

I’m salivating just remembering it. The food at Housel Bay was always extremely good - now it’s exceptional. Fiona doesn’t overface you with too much so you can fully enjoy all three courses - and for sweet lovers, her tasting plate trio of eton mess, gooseberry icecream and frozen strawberry fool was out of this world. My description does not do it justice.

Please don’t tell too many or Housel Bay will become too popular!

This popular pub restaurant does not have the largest menu in the land but everything it does do it does very well. The atmosphere is friendly, the beach is literaly a couple of steps from the front door, the beers are varied (including local brews) and well managed and kids and dogs seem welcome. This is the sort of evening memories are made of.

Having seen a review in local paper we decided to try out the New Yard on the spur of the moment. Managed to get a table for later in the evening as just two of us. Food was fantastic and the 'January Warmer' deal was an absolute bargain at £19.50 each including canapes, 3 courses, sorbet, wine and coffee! Locally sourced, beautifully cooked food in lovely surroundings with a nicely relaxed atmosphere. Front of house staff were professional, warm and friendly, we left feeling like old friends, but not before we booked again for my husband's birthday next week. We will become regulars I am sure.

My partner and I found this charming peaceful and relaxing pub/restaurant by chance. We and our 18 month old twins were welcomed without hesitation and even offered toys and colouring pens to play with. The food was delicious for adults AND kids alike and so refreshing not to have to choose the predictable fishfingers/nuggets for the kids. They had fresh baked home made pizza which was perfect. The service was not only friendly but went above and beyond the call of duty offering us directions to the obscure place we were looking for. We were so lucky to have stumbled upon this charming place. We give it 10 out of 10!

We loved it so much we had dinner here three times in the week we stayed on the Lizard. Fantastic value for such superbly cooked organic food. Catered for me as a coeliac really well too - even produced home-made gluten-free bread and I could have a proper pudding (not just ice cream). Chef-owners Neil & Leonie are talented and welcoming.

A true gem! The food served here is absolutely delicious with close attention to detail making all the difference. The service was second to none and drinks very reasonable. It was lovely to find such a welcoming smoke free venue who served food of a quality you wouln't expect for the price. Not your typical pub grub - definately a cut above. Well worth a visit!

Our meal at the Halzephron was the highlight of our holiday. Wonderful relaxed atmosphere, good wine list and simply excellent food. The menu was well-balanced and the food absolutely delicious - traditional fare but with a twist so it felt like a really special meal. Be warned - the specials use fresh ingredients and two of the dishes were already finished when we sat down at 7.30! Cannot recommend this place too highly.

I took my family of 4 to the ship inn about 3 weeks ago, and i was expecting a nice meal because the pricing of the restaurant is not that of a normal pub. We were not disappointed though the food and service was excellent, we were served by a local lad who was very pleasent. The pub had a very warm presence and i would definetly go back if we lived closer.
