Review this restaurant

Proprietor: Edmond and Charles Inkin

Head Chef: Bruce Rennie

This is The Gurnard’s Head, a dining pub with rooms on Cornwall's Atlantic coast between St. Ives and St. Just, near the Minack Theatre, Zennor, Penzance and Newlyn.

We want The Gurnard’s Head to be an inn that returns you momentarily to the slower pace of life that so many of us yearn for.

Time spent in this part of the world will unwind you as you enjoy one of the country’s most dramatic coastlines, one that has inspired artists and walkers for centuries.

The salty air is proven to make you sleep deeply in the most comfortable Vi-Spring beds. You will eat simple, earthy and delicious food. Beers, wine and sherries: all chosen because we love them.

We support our local community, source our produce with sustainability in mind, and we set our prices with our local customers in mind, not the extended tourist season.

We loved the place as soon as we set eyes on it. We hope you will too. And we are open all year, so please do come and visit us.

Further Details

And, like so many things, food is best kept simple. We have built the reputation of the Gurnard’s Head’s kitchen on this maxim.

Our short, fresh and seasonal menu changes every day according to what is brought to our back door or what our chefs feel is at its seasonal best.

In Winter you might get Fish Soup with Rouille or in summer, a Ceviche of Sea Bass alongside leaf salads foraged by Fat Hen.

•Switch off in the soulful embrace of one of Britain’s most awe-inspiring landscapes.

•Food that you want to eat, that is strong in flavour and spirited, cooked beautifully and sourced locally.

•Sleep beautifully on Vi-Spring beds with views to gorse covered moorland or to the foaming Atlantic

We have travel cots which we will happily make up for no charge. Although we are delighted to see children of any age, we would want you to be aware before staying that the walls between bedrooms are thin and crying babies can be heard in neighbouring rooms. Accommodation:
Our approach to the bedrooms is based soundly on a maxim often forgotten by hotels: that a night’s sleep will only be as good as the bed itself. So we source only the best Vi-Spring beds. It is no coincidence that our visitors’ books and inbox are full of requests for their details. Our bedrooms are about melting into one of the books that lie around the building, listening to a Radio 4 play on the Roberts radio or staring out to the sea or to the sheep flecked moorsSome guests are even are sufficiently hypnotised to wait for the hooved shuffle of the cows on their twice-daily amble to and from milking.

Functions:
Our priority is to provide a refuge from the modern world for our local customers and regular guests. However, The Gurnard’s Head remains a spectacular site for wedding or other parties and we are occasionally persuaded to host them. For a tailor-made quote, please contact

Recommendations:
Recognition comes ultimately from guests but, for what it’s worth, we've been included in The Good Food and Good Hotel Guides, Hardens and Michelin since opening, as well as many travel and food websites. - The 2012 Good Pub Guide thinks The Gurnard's is The Best Cornish Dining Pub for the third time in five years. Recognition by one of the best of the independent guides.

Menu Summary:
Our menu is not long. Never more than 7 or so starters or main courses. All driven by what our suppliers bring to our back door. Fish from day boats, greenery from small growers. Plenty for non fish or meat eaters. We will change the menu every day. If you are staying for more than a couple of days and have a particular fish or seafood that you would like to eat, please do let us know.

Vegetarian Options:
We think vegetarian food can be great food. Cornwall's larder is a great opportunity to cook great food for those who don't want to eat meat or fish. Our aim to to make the numerous vegetarian items on our menu so good that carnivores and pescivores will want to choose them. Have a look.... We can also cater for coeliacs and those on gluten free diets, but do ask that we are advised of any dietary requirements when a booking is made.

Sample Dish:
Scallops, Sweetcorn Cream, Black Pudding, Apple. - Gurnard, Mashed Potatoes, Smoked Haddock, Leeks, Curry. - Fig & Almond Tart, Honey & Lavender Ice Cream
