Review this restaurant

Proprietor: Bob and Emma Semple

There is so much to like about the Tree. The owners are real hosts that understand that you have a choice where to eat out.

The menu is packed full of classic like scallops and bacon, and juicy steaks with mushrooms and onion rings.

We have an extensive specials board, with many homemade dishes, starter: Smoked Haddock fishcakes £5.95, Homemade pates £6.95, our own curries made from scratch, £9.25.

We do quite a few fish dishes and vegetarian dishes: Seabass on a bed of creamed leeks, bacon and peas, £13.95 for eg.

We can also cater for coeliacs and will always accommodate people as far as possible with other dietry difficulties if given a bit of notice.

Great Fish, Gammon and Lamb all find the traditional accompaniments but in a modern fresh style. Lovely vegetables and plenty of the them in this traditional 600 year old hostelry.

Further Details

For a casual pint the back bar at the Tree is your ticket with good bar meals.

The front bar is livelier with plenty of real ale drinkers , pool and darts to keep you entertained.

The courtyard is a sun trap and a wonderful place for a Saturday pub lunch.

Sundays in the gallery its hard to get a spot at one of the areas best carvery.

Every night of the week the restaurants turns out classic British dishes with care and attention.

The building itself is worth the price of admission but the food will have you coming back for more.

Antony Payne the Cornish Giant (7ft 4in) was born in the Manor House (Tree Inn) Stratton and served Sir Beville Grenville and later his son Sir Richard at the Plymouth Garrison where his portrait was painted by Sir Godfrey Kneller.

With all his size and bulk, the witty Payne showed no signs of clumsiness, but awed everyone with his dexterity and very quick reflexes.

They also say he had the brains to match the brawn that had thrust him into the role of a mighty man.
When he retired he returned to Stratton to live in The Tree Inn.

He died in 1691 and his coffin had to be lowered through the ceiling as it was too large to move any other way. He was buried in Stratton Church.
