The Flood of 2004
On the 16th August 2004, Boscastle experienced one of Britain's most unusual natural disasters. An estimated 200.4mm of rain fell in just 4 hours, causing surges of water to rush into the River Valency. With the river at maximum capacity and the torrential rain still falling, the River Valency, along with the drainage system and surface water from the roads, caused the village to flood.
The lower floor of The Riverside experienced extensive water damage. Since the flood, huge amounts of money have been spent on Boscastle, improving flood defences and the ancient drainage system. The village has now regenerated, with the Hotel being refurbished to an even higher standard than it was before!
